nixCraft 🐧

Hey everyone, out of curiosity, how much do you spend on a , , (or Windows) cloud instance for your side project? Also, please state the provider.

@nixCraft I get $150 a month of free Azure because of my Microsoft partnership, and I use that for most everything.

@nixCraft ~143.95 a month at Hetzner (small statuscheck/frontend container + biggest storagebox + a server with 4x16TB disks which is currently running this mastodon server and other stuff like Gitlab, Matrix, Seafile, Nextcloud, etc)

Been thinking of moving elsewhere, and already have a full copy of everything locally, though also kinda hoping to have fiber here soon, if all goes well I should have symmetric 10gbit to my home which will easily let me host my own things on my own solar power :)

@anthropy @nixCraft thats cool. My major concern on hosting at home is failure, specially email.

@luis I specifically do not host email even at hetzner because there is just no way to guarantee any delivery if you're not hotmail/gmail/whatever, I just use different things. I don't think it would be much harder to host email at home, you just have to make sure you have a static IP because otherwise places like spamhaus will hate you because your DKIM/SPF records constantly stop/start matching and your IP reputation score doesn't carry over

@anthropy well, right, that's exactly my point. I use cloudflare email route and then my own routes at the end, but theres another difficulty, which is uptime. There's no feasable way to do it at home without an high availability fallback.

@nixCraft Digital Ocean, about 15 minutes a month just to test something before putting it on my production server, then I kill the droplet until I need to do it again for something else.

@nixCraft I'm just over €5 a month at the moment on a small project hosted on digital ocean.

@nixCraft
Well for the €1000 MSDN subscription per year I get €45 per month free on azure.
But since I have a #forgejo runner on my home server (which was previously running there), I use the cloud rarely.

@nixCraft about 12 Euro per month. #netcup

That thing provides my complete private cloud. With email and web, #nextcloud #gitea and more. Super stable.

@datenimperator @nixCraft

How do you keep it down to 12€ on #netcup ? It looks like maybe an end of month deal might save you a lot, but #nextcloud and #gitea use a decent amount of RAM and need disk storage so I would expect you'd need a decent size VPS or Root Server.

@aaravchen @nixCraft it's a 4c G9 VPS, with 8GB RAM and 160GB SSD storage. It runs traefik, two websites, nextcloud, gitea, drone, matomo, all dockerized. Plus Email. And it's mostly idle. All for 11,76 EUR to be precise.

@nixCraft I spend a couple of hours a week on my Digital Ocean servers.

@nixCraft €1 / month at Versio. (ipv6 only though)

@nixCraft $600 Hetzner cloud and metal

@nixCraft Around $50 at Vultr for several #FreeBSD and #OpenBSD VPS that handle email, website and a self hosted VPN.

@nixCraft
I usually go with digital ocean for my projects. I don't have very big demands, usually I go with the $7 basic droplet. I switched over to CloudFlare for my static hosting though.

@nixCraft netcup.eu which has the best prices given the resources starting at 3$ and frantech.ca/buyvm.net which also has various locations at a low price (2$) for low-end machines. I also have shared instances at namecrane.com which is also generally cheap for all plans. For block storage I use Hetzner, 3$.

@nixCraft about €15/mth on AWS for a ~3Tb S3 Glacier backup and 2hrs/day ELK stack log processing, to give me off-site backup and 60 days event storage.
I will probably move ELK to my brother's house now he has a decent fibre link and AA Internet 🙂 Need to get off AWS, it was a learning thing for me when I was still working...

@nixCraft $110 or so to #Hetzner of 2x physical boxes + 1x storage box, $35 or so to #Linode for a few VPS machines, I use #FreeDNS over at #1984.is to host my domains, then there might be small subscriptions here and there to test things like #CoPilot, #ChatGPT and other such things from time to time but not constantly

@nixCraft

$0 on the oracle cloud free tier.

@nixCraft I’m paying $0 for Oracle Cloud resources. I’ve offloaded to the cloud the part of home infrastructure including DNS, DHCP and the bunch of worker nodes for the home Kubernetes cluster.

It looks fantastic, but Oracle won’t charge you for the IPSec IKEv2 Site-to-Site VPN in case you will stay within 10 TB/mo of egress traffic.

@nixCraft ~70 eur at hetzner. I have some bare metal boxes there.

@nixCraft up to ~100USD for AWS, Vultr and V.PS in total for few VM and offside backup and CDN.

@nixCraft You mean doing illegal things (pay for something outside of tunisia)? Sorry I'm not a criminal

@nixCraft USD$25 at Vultr. Mail, web servers and a discourse instance.

@nixCraft I have a 40EUR p/m auction box with Hetzner. I deploy various things (side projects and some self hosted stuff) to it with docker compose. If a project needs scaling out, I'll probably go for a hetzner VPS or AWS. I probably run 5 projects on that box and a smattering of other shared services.

@nixCraft Around 50 Watts? That drives 8+2 cores, 64+16 GB RAM and 1+6+6 TB of ZFS pools on SSD, HDD and HDD respectively. Now I’m just waiting for performant ARM systems to become mainstream and affordable so I can increase my per-core performance and lower my electricity usage a bit in my next upgrade.

@nixCraft 0*, the cloud is a trap

*if you want to stretch it, Cloudflare Pages

@nixCraft
I spend $15/mo at ramnode because I'm too lazy to move to their new systems, which would be like $5 I think. I also spend about $100/mo on power for my rack, which is about a quarter or less of what it would cost to cloud it.

@nixCraft $5/month/instance on Akamai/Linode. I currently have three instances running so $15/mo.

@nixCraft
Currently around 40€/month on Digital Ocean and AWS.
It can be brought down a lot of I had the time and mental energy to do it.

@nixCraft about $40/mo total for 4 Linux (Ubuntu/Debian) nodes over at . I’ve been pleased with their offerings and there support is great.

@nixCraft frantech: 7$ for 1GB of ram

@nixCraft $50 for my blog, $5 for all my other small side projects.

@nixCraft
$15 at linode for my Mastodon instance, and about $25 for my Nextcloud at Digitalocean. Both on Debian :)

@nixCraft
Around 20 euros/month for 3 VMs of very small to small sizes at Aruba / Contabo / Switzcloud, with different usages. I self-host a lot too, so that's mainly for redundancy of some services.

@nixCraft 0$/month. I have an old unused Pentium IV pc that had Windows XP, and now it runs Debian server. I host all my stuffs there.

@nixCraft I have 2 OVH Ubuntu server VM's one at 17,50€/month that is a Mastodon server and one at 3,5€/month that is a tor exit node. Also have a physical server with them at 20 something €/month that eventually should host everything I do as containers once I finally master that enough to be stable.

@nixCraft $7 on Vultr. Just two simple blogs.

@nixCraft I host a dynamic website on a debian server from AWS for around $4 a month
