I really wish some more thought had been put into the #Wordpress integration to the Fediverse.
Having a blog post that comes from @someblog.wordpress.com@someblog.wordpress.com is so clumsy. And a blank profile too.
Perhaps V2 will be better
@daj there was a lot of thinking about the username! We want to have the domain as identifier, this might look a bit special in the first place, but that’s how ActivityPub was designed for in the first place. If your handle is known on the instance, it is enough to start searching for the first domain.
The ActivityPub plugin uses the informations of the blog. So, the more you define there (site icon, description, ...) the less empty it is.
@pfefferle@mastodon.social I see what you are saying, but I find repetition is clumsy. I guess there is never a good answer that fits everyone. Something like @blog.domain.tld@wordpress.online seems to flow better to identify the blog and that it is s wordpress site, but that does tie you to their domain name.
@daj I also understand your point. I just wanted to make it clear that this was not an ad hoc decision. We have given it a lot of thought. By the way, @username@domain.tld is one thing that is not part of the ActivityPub spec and was braught on the table as requirement by Mastodon. So the idea would be to have a simple `@example.wordpress.com` as an alternative to `@example.wordpress.com@example.wordpress.com`, somewhere in the near future.
@daj The `@username@domain.com` identifier is mainly because in the fediverse, multi-user platforms were the most common thing for quite some time, but with the addition of blog systems like WordPress, we need to rethink some of these "old" pattern. For example, a single user instance does not require a user handle in addition to the domain.
However, we are trying to participate in communication to bring in these needs for a future update of the spec.
@pfefferle @daj Here's a related issue at Mastodon bug tracker: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/22213
>Feature: Allow to use domains as handles
@silverpill @daj oh thanks a lot! nice that there is already progress!
...and @manton and @snarfed.org already commented!
Go go #IndieWeb
@pfefferle Cool, thanks for adding to that GitHub issue! I'd love to see some momentum around this.
@manton @pfefferle I'd love to see this implemented. It seems like a big step towards better profile portability.
@silverpill @pfefferle @daj This looks like a fantastic feature for the Fediverse. It’s like a middle ground between huge servers like mastodon.social and the single-user instances of the #IndieWeb.
Stuff like this is the future of the Fediverse.
@benpate plus it would be cool to have the exact same domain username on mastodon and bluesky (though im not sure if that’d work well for bridges)
