IF only I had a dollar for ever time I hear that the "system" needs to be changed and that the "system" is at fault and the "system" keeps us in badly paid jobs....

Well, let's change the system. Yes, we can. One example of a country that did things differently in 2008, look at Iceland which imprisoned bankers after 2008 financial crisis.

Vox · Iceland put bankers in jail rather than bailing them out — and it workedBy Matthew Yglesias

Here's an article on the 4 day work week and UBI which, whilst quite cynical, still shows some important points:

"Already, it’s estimated that, in the first year of ChatGPT, 14 per cent of Americans lost their jobs to robots."

"... because AI will reduce employment.
But if true, it’s hard to see how four days will be any more of a safeguard than five. That’s where UBI comes in..."

What do you think?

The Independent · A four-day week? Soon, we may not work at allBy Chris Blackhurst

“But who will clean toilets if everyone gets UBI?

Maybe… the people who want to do it, at a fair wage? Maybe... the task will get automated?

Maybe the real question is: why do we accept that some jobs should be so miserable and underpaid that people only do them out of desperation?

#UBI forces us to value labor instead of exploiting it and it gives us the freedom to choose the jobs we take. ❤️

As an adult with a disability who is dependent on benefits, you should know that I have skin in this game, however:

Whenever Universal Basic Income is trialled it delivers improved levels of interaction with work and healthcare, and it does it with reduced costs and without being cruel and stupid.

Here's my takeaway from the article:

>...spent two years developing a report which modelled an income-tested Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI)...

>...recommends a five to seven year federal/provincial demonstration project...

Another report. Another demonstration project. No action.

To be fair, the article authors seem as frustrated with the situation as I am.

2/2 Despite what FOX news hosts wail all the time, humans by nature are not lazy so they won't stop working. But UBI would fundamentally change society.

Although Guaranteed Income will help keep people out of poverty, it's a stopgap under firm government control and doesn't change the nature of work at all.

It will be interesting to see who starts talking GI instead of UBI.

1/2 They have. And my 500 character limit is annoying here.

UBI at the right level gives workers a choice where they want to work and what wages they will accept, and extends that to people being able to pick zero wage income and just volunteering or running small business that don't need to make a profit. In a strong sense, it creates the ultimate free market capitalism.

Even the Basic Income Canada Network has shifted to talking about Guaranteed Income. I hope that's at least Guaranteed *Livable* Income, but it's definitely a step backwards from Universal Basic Income. They've shifted because they think it will be easier to get politicians to accept GLI rather than UBI.

I think BICN is making a mistake.

In case you wanted to look at the results of the #GiveDirectly #UniversalBasicIncome from 2023 study yourself:

"Early findings from the world’s largest #UBI study"

"Both a large lump sum and a long-term UBI proved highly effective. The lump sum enabled big investments and the guarantee of 12 years of UBI encouraged savings and risk-taking."

givedirectly.org/2023-ubi-resu

GiveDirectly · Early findings from the world’s largest UBI study | GiveDirectlyMoney always helps, but for the poorest, one large lump sum can last a long time. A long-term universal basic income also looks promising.

"The Era of Solopreneurs is Here"

"An engineer with AI tool can now outbuild a 100-person engineering team."

Whilst the #opportunities of using #AI are great, the #downside is that not #everyone will be able to #succeed as a #solopreneur

That is where #UBI comes in: it provides a safety net for those who need more time to adjust to the new world. ❤️

Neartail · The Era of Solopreneurs is HereBy Mani Doraisamy

Americans need to be prepared for the certainty that when this is all over, the structure of our society will have been irreparably broken. The data will no longer exist to put our government back together.

This may represent the only real opportunity we will ever have to finally fix everything that is wrong, by instituting systems that don't require that data to function.

#UniversalBasicIncome without eligibility testing doesn't require that data. You're here? You get paid. Simple. #USpol
