Trying to figure out who originally created this - I see an imgur post from 2016 (https://imgur.com/502-bad-gateway-9McwzMa) which I presume means it was probably actually posted to Reddit. The post doesn't have a lot of views, though, so maybe there was an earlier one. Search struggles a bit because the man is from a stock image
@JenMsft Yeah. Tineye finds the same post you found as the earliest too. Not sure if that’s the platform you used.
@jpsays it was yeah - it and bing visual search are my go tos
@JenMsft, indeed.
The oldest original father and son picture I found was from 2013, and the oldest gateway version I found has the same date you found, with a time, 16:00, but also a username: joostmq

@JenMsft "ngnix take care of your own problems"
@JenMsft uhhh that's good! I'm gonna steal this!
@JenMsft Oh, wicked, bad, naughty, evil Gateway! Oh, it is a bad piece of hardware, and it must pay the penalty...You must spank it well, and after you are done with it, you may deal with it as you like... and then...
@JenMsft does that lead to a gateway timeout
Needs a 2024 refresh with a Citrix NetScaler.
@mdavis Citrix NetScaler, as a 2024 refresh?
NetScaler started in 1997. It's not even from the 21st century.
/me is horrified people are still pimping crappy commercial software. Having previously administered Citrix MetaFrame among other things; Citrix explicitly *prohibited* many security updates from Micro$oft being installed in order for their software to function.
Who needs cryptographic backdoors with such it.sh software?
@JenMsft naughty gateway!
@JenMsft will add to my cute 400 and 500 code messages for my intro networking classes
Just downloaded for the exact same purpose.
"bad gateway. it would not sit. it would not beg. it was a bad gateway."
@JenMsft This reminded me of the story of an elderly person back in the dial-up days, who went to return their newly purchased computer as faulty. TLDR, it was a Gateway brand computer, and they'd misunderstood what this error meant.
@JenMsft I may have modified a work configuration or two to change the default 503
@JenMsft definitely my favorite http error page along with varnish's guru meditation https://www.varnish-software.com/developers/tutorials/troubleshooting-varnish/#the-guru-meditation-error
@JenMsft Would it also be funny if it was a Gateway computer?
