First, you have to follow a lot more accounts. Doing so will bring your timeline alive. There is no algorithm so it take a little work in the beginning, but it is worth it.
Second, you can follow hashtags on Mastodon, just like accounts. Do this to see who is active for specific subjects, then you will have more accounts to follow.
