New blog post: iPod 3G conversion to SD card and a new battery.
I wanted to document my steps for anyone else that wanted to try this. And you don't need a disk image from the iPod as a starting point.
I just updated my iPod 3G blog post because the left channel suddenly stopped. Turns out it was the flex cable connector. I was able to repair it with a little surgery. I also have the pin out in case you want to attempt it yourself.
I forgot about the HP branded iPods.
Also, can we talk about how good Apple Garamond looks on the back of the original iPod?
Update: After 5 charge cycles, the new battery in my #iPod 3G has settled on just over 9 hours of total run time, including powering the iTrip FM transmitter.
@paulrickards Nice! I have a pair of iPods sitting right here (A1059 and A1099). Now I'm curious if the same steps would work for them!
@tedmielczarek Give it a try and let me know!
@paulrickards iTrip!!! Wow that takes me back.
@paulrickards I remember the iTrip fondly.
@paulrickards
Changed the battery of my 3G too, a couple of years ago. I was disappointed to see the iPod shutdowns after 3 ou 4 hours... Maybe, i didn't bought a good battery...
I'll read your article with attention Thx!
@paulrickards gonna nitpick here and point out it can't be an original one if it's 10GB.
@mike Ha! Fair. TBH, it felt high but I didn't verify. Honest eBay sellers! I never had one of the originals. But the original sentiment is still there. That font tho!
@mike Hang on, maybe 10GB did exist in the 1st generation line?
"When first introduced, the iPod 1G only existed in a 5 GB version. The 10 GB version was added on March 30, 2002."
@paulrickards oh yeah it's definitely first gen, I was just being terrible about fine details and technicalities!
The second gen 10GB ones had a different font for the logo and I really don't like how much I know about this and how many examples I can just pull out of a drawer ...
@mike Interesting! So that might be the transitional point from Apple Garamond to Myriad. Maybe they changed it mid production of the 1st gen 10GB model?
@paulrickards not sure, I think it started in the second generation.
My 5GB original one has the Garamond logo, but just no indication of capacity since they only came in one size at first. I think the addition of that was the only change in the first run.
@paulrickards it's in much better condition than the one here haha - the first ones didn't have any size markings at all, not that I can find many angles where it's at all readable.
Love that font
@paulrickards @Eggfreckles These backs still look so gorgeous. Like pure metal ingot.
@paulrickards 2,000 songs in your pocket. I have one of the classics, I believe its 20 GBs. I love mounting it in #Mac OS 10.1 and seeing the icon on the desktop. There is just something about how different the Mac experience was like in the early 2000's.
@paulrickards as one should.
@paulrickards how is that not an HPod?
@paulrickards I am trying to subscribe to your blog via RSS, but for some reason I only get the comments, and the default WordPress feed location yields a 404?
@sindarina Hmm. For whatever reason, the URL is this:
https://biosrhythm.com/?feed=rss2
Maybe I've got something misconfigured?
@paulrickards That URL does seem to be missing in your <HEAD>, it lists the homepage URL instead.
So with autodetection, you get the comments feed even if you select the main one?
@sindarina Honestly, I'm not sure. I can't seem to find any RSS settings in the admin pages. WP is a big mystery to me.
@paulrickards Yeah, it should just work by default. Perhaps it's some bug in the template you use, or something like that
@sindarina Yeah IDK. I've never been 100% comfortable with WP. I have this lingering fear that I'm going to click update on something and oops accidentally my whole blog lol
@sindarina I do use that feed URL in The Old Reader and it seems to work consistently. Is it working for you?
@paulrickards The one you linked earlier does work for me in Reeder Classic, via Feedbin;
https://biosrhythm.com/?feed=rss2
But if I let it autodetect, from the main URL;
it gives me the comment feed instead, even when I don't select it.
Which I haven't run into before with WordPress-based blogs, so it's a bit of a mystery.
@paulrickards I've got 3 or 4 3rd Gen iPods that I have been trying to restore for a while but constantly running into issues (firewire required) or just failing, thanks for this guide, I will give it a go!
@copey FireWire for syncing is still problematic for me so I just use USB. But the great thing is you can build the partitions with just the SD card in your computer-- no iPod needed at that point. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
