I've made a deliberate choice against a quoting feature because it inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours. You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Even when doing it for "good" like ridiculing awful comments, you are giving awful comments more eyeballs that way. No quote toots. Thank's
@Gargron @shanselman people will just screenshot, then.
@ssg @Gargron @shanselman Or link. I see the point, and can agree in many use cases, but linking will do where quoting is needed. If someone wants to create an easy way to do that, it can be done in a client and needs no support on the server.
@ssg @Gargron @shanselman I'd argue that's preferable than linking to content so objectionable that you didn't want to reply to it directly.
If it's something you want to reply to then reply to it. If it's something you want to comment upon, from a removed perspective, then screen grab or link to the toot. There's no need for the person in question to be *notified* that you're tooting about them.
@georgepotter @Gargron @shanselman i wrote a thread about this: https://twitter.com/esesci/status/1589722918740983808
