A month ago I did a thought experiment about @letsencrypt:

Now I read this by @aral:

Apparently Let's Encrypt is/was at risk of losing a substantial amount of funding from opentech.fund (OTF). Other projects like Tor are/were also hit by these policy changes from the Trump administration. BUT, OTF fought back and seems to be OK:

For now. Interesting times.

Aral’s fediverse serverAral Balkan (@aral@mastodon.ar.al)🚨 Let’s Encrypt at risk from Trump cuts to OTF: “Let’s Encrypt received around $800,000 in funding from the OTF” Dear @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu, get your heads out of your arses and let’s find @letsencrypt@infosec.exchange €1M/year (a rounding error in EU finances) and have them move to the EU. If Let’s Encrypt is fucked, the web is fucked, and the Small Web is fucked too. So how about we don’t let that happen, yeah? (In the meanwhile, if the Let’s Encrypt folks want to make a point about how essential they are, it might be an idea to refuse certificates to republican politicians. See how they like their donation systems breaking in real time…) CC @nlnet@nlnet.nl @NGIZero@mastodon.xyz #USA #fascism #OpenTechFund #LetsEncrypt #SSL #TLS #encryption #EU #web #tech #SmallWeb #SmallTech https://mastodon.social/@publictorsten/114223873439053263

@BjornW @letsencrypt @aral is there an EU based alterative to LE?

@spyro @BjornW @letsencrypt @aral ZeroSSL is Austrian, but not independent like Let's Encrypt is.
