I cannot stress this enough - so many of the people in the Trump WH, including Trump himself would NEVER pass even the most rudimentary background checks. They have access to intel only because the Senate Republicans confirmed their incompetencies. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2025/03/trump-administration-accidentally-texted-me-its-war-plans/682151/
No one is this sloppy just once. We should assume these clowns have compromised significant portions of our natsec system by now.
This is key. I am sure that Trump's apologists are going to trot out in their defense that Signal is an encrypted app. Securing intelligence is a matter of hardware and software, and making sure compartmentalized information does not leave those compartments. They are failing Security 101.
And finally, records retention is not just for accountability. If our adversaries can breach your unsecure comms AND you don't archive your end, it's effectively impossible to triage how much damage you caused. They are covering their own asses while risking all of ours.
Meanwhile, Mike Waltz is going to be furious when he finds out what Mike Waltz did. https://x.com/michaelgwaltz/status/1668332264797896704
@SeanCasten This is impeachment worthy.
@unsafelyhotboots @SeanCasten And?
The only punishable crime now is disloyalty to the fascist cause.
@gooba42 @SeanCasten And?
Impeachment isn't a criminal process. It can be started by Rep Casten. You are right, it likely won't go anywhere but the act of pushing for impeachment brings this to light.
Fascists hate daylight on their criming.
@unsafelyhotboots @SeanCasten We don't need to wait until the DNC and Schumer declare it worthwhile. Just file the paperwork.
@unsafelyhotboots @SeanCasten I think starting a failed coup against the government of the United States is impeachment worthy. (It also disqualifies Trump to be president in the first place.) Illegally giving people who haven't even been approved access to classified systems and records and firing people the president can't legally fire are also impeachable.
But of course, that would assume the US still had any sorts of standards or laws or even a functioning government in the first place.
@nazokiyoubinbou @unsafelyhotboots @SeanCasten That was in the before times!
@Doreen32128 @unsafelyhotboots @SeanCasten Yeah, Project 2025 is destroying America at a terrifying rate. At least before Trump was just wildly incompetent and evil. Project 2025 has a published plan for destroying America on a point-by-point basis and is following it well enough that even the incompetence isn't stopping them.
@unsafelyhotboots @SeanCasten
Worthy, yes. But with the current house, not bloody likely.
Maybe we can flip the house in the state elections going on now, but there’s still the senate.
Wake me in November 2026. Maybe then we can salvage something from the ashes.
Just the fact that the Great Orange Turd has the nuke codes fubar'd natsec from Day 1
#JesusWept #SMFH
@SeanCasten I think there is little doubt our natsec system has been compromised. I've been assuming that since his first term, and my belief has only been reinforced by things like all the secret documents at Mar-a-lago and the fact that so many CIA agents were lost after giving trump the list of them. I think moving forward we have to assume our adversaries know our secrets, until we can reestablish secrecy.
@jamesmarshall @SeanCasten I still remember him refusing to change phones from the Samsung Galaxy S3 that he had at the time. It was an older model even then, abandoned by the manufacturer and missing a very very important security update. The phone could be compromised just by sending a specially crafted MMS message. And he was on Putin's contacts list.
He carried that phone into classified meetings and debriefs where no one else was allowed to bring in a phone at all.
@SeanCasten @Lurkle "move fast and break laws"
Also: “But her emails…”
@SeanCasten Out of genuine curiosity: is gross misconduct and incompetence grounds for impeachment.
@starluna @SeanCasten Yes.
But then if the GOP would allow that and Democrats were brave enough to do it, it would have happened eight years ago during his first term of rule over America.
@SeanCasten your inflammatory use of rhex
second-person disclines me to trust you.
@SeanCasten typo in article: it should read:
"WHEN they lose their phone, have them stolen, or have spyware installed..."
@SeanCasten Do that as a cleared member of the IC or DoD who isn't a political appointee and you might as well just put yourself on leave, stay home, find some lawyers, and rework your retirement planning.
@SeanCasten Good point about the sloppiness. Terrifying, too.
@pseudonym @SeanCasten Don't worry! They'll put the unredacted transcript in the Bar-a-Lago loo before it autodeletes.
@SeanCasten they secretly installed satellite internet for the White House, under the control of an unelected drug addict who regularly meets with leaders from the stated enemies of the US. The secretary of Defense is a drunk adulterer who used to work for a propaganda network.
Of course US national security is compromised, it would be shocking to see any competence from these people.
@SeanCasten@mastodon.social If this is the only time this has happened, it's down to pure luck.
@SeanCasten @anniethebruce this is not the first time, 100%
@SeanCasten Exactly, and that they are violating federal law related to records and information on the daily.
#uspolitics
@SeanCasten
This going on while DTRA, Export Control and other US intelligence agencies are being gutted.
@SeanCasten As a former holder of a DOE Security Clearance that it took me literally YEARS to get, I find the entire administration to be treasonously incompetent in their handling of classified materials and systems.
Such treasonous incompetence is not just grounds for revocation of their clearances, it is entirely sufficient cause to begin a trial for treason which would ultimately result in their deaths by hanging due to their own declarations of war.
@SeanCasten I hope these clown accidentally disclose their plans to attack their (former) allies. Not that it would stop them from doing it.
@SeanCasten I guess DOGE better look at just getting rid of those billions we spend on military coms if they’re just gonna pull this stupid shit
@SeanCasten Based on The Atlantic's review of Jeffery Goldberg's reporting on how dramatically insecure this entire conversation was - i.e. it should have all happened within a SCIF for operational parts of actions - I have a feeling these texts will become part of the criminal proceedings against everyone mentioned in this story.
And where is POTUS in all of this? It's all "the President wants" or "he said" ... but it's clear he is not making these decisions at all. Dementia much?
These incompetents got their jobs because billionaires bribed...ahem... funded Senate Republicans (and certain Democrats) to rubber stamp their confirmations.
The billionaires certainly are NOT making public statements advocating for competence in appointments, so they must approve of these national security breaches.
https://americansfortaxfairness.org/billionaire-clans-spend-nearly-2-billion-2024-elections/
What are the billionaires getting in exchange?
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/10/28/how-republican-billionaires-learned-to-love-trump-again
@Npars01 @SeanCasten
US security is not their highest priority.
They are rewarded by hostile nations for passing them classified information.
They benefit from a US that has been sapped of power.
1. No threat of regulatory "interference"
2. Lucrative govt contracts
3. Keeping US govt alive means govt cleans up after them (and whatever else they want).
hegseth: "I will do all we can to enforce 100% OPSEC” -- said over signal group including a journalist...
i think he is doing OOPS-SEC, OPSEC.
the stunning level of incompetence shown here is a disaster for US security.
@SeanCasten They were hired because they’re white guys and MAGA. Age of non-DEI.
47 -- you say you like to fire people. Now might be a good time to say, "You're fired."
Was he drunk again?
This lush was likely intoxicated when he did this..
@SeanCasten I will personally give $50 to the first reporter to address any of these fucked up regime "cabinet" members as "Your Incompetency."
@_L1vY_ In the case of Hegseth, maybe, "Your Drunkency."
@BruceMirken "Your Intoxicancy"
@_L1vY_ @BruceMirken I heard he was trying to cut back so maybe Your Drunkishness. Bonus points for slurability.
@_L1vY_ @SeanCasten
I'd like to offer a matching amount.
@SeanCasten And share the blame for this with every single Senator who voted to confirm.
@SeanCasten
Simply put, not one appointee in the entire cult show is competent or qualified. They are there for one thing to distract while the billionaires rob the system.
