I've got 134 followers on #mastodon. So if I create a new post on mastodon.social, does the instance send 134 copies of my post out, or one to each instance that hosts my followers? #activitypub
@YurkshireLad with the exception to users who are on the same server as you are on, of course
@manlycoffee will that ever change?
@YurkshireLad Twitter used to also send out a copy of new Tweets to EVERY follower of that Tweet's author.
So this pattern isn't exclusive to a publicly federated systems; private and centralized services used to also use this pattern.
So I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't change.
@YurkshireLad not saying that it won't, though
There has been a bit of improvement with this — look up "sharedInbox".
(Now the Fediverse needs batching, in addition to this.)
@YurkshireLad 1 to each instance.
@django hmm that contradicts what @manlycoffee said.
@manlycoffee @YurkshireLad it would actually depend on whether the followers software implements a SharedInbox as mastodon does.
@YurkshireLad @django they're correct. I just learned about the sharedinbox
