On Nostr, Jack Dorsey wants to replace traditional likes with “zaps”, a crypto form of payment that uses the Lightning Network for sending micropayments.

That’s right, he wants you to pay money for liking a Nostr post.

@atomicpoet

"Likes are superficial and exist onliy to inform an algorithm."

No one tell him about fediverse likes which don't drive anything except me feeling good that someone read and liked something I did.

It's impossible for him to think outside of the monster he created.

Even when he's trying to rethink it, it's still a monetized hellscape.

@oliphant @atomicpoet Arghh.... red flags fly every time someone tries to throw crypto into the mix.

@atomicpoet

Also

"Relevance algorithms have their place, but they are best informed by a truly costly action."

Or, if you don't overthink it, my dude, by your followers pushing stuff up to you that they think you might want to see.

That's not costly, but it's likely relevant since you chose to follow those people in the first place.

@oliphant @atomicpoet indeed. That single sentence tells us everything we will ever need to know about Jack. Utterly repugnant.

@oliphant @atomicpoet

Payment for likes is so they can skim some of it off the top for themselves.

@atomicpoet And since that thing won't be an actually #decentralized #cryptocurrency but just some shitty #blockchain #shitcoin, it'll be like #Steam Account Balance & Market Items or #Robux where he'll constantly take a cut every single time someone is buying, selling, transfering, or cashing out money...

@atomicpoet [hopefully] minus the exploitation of minors that for very good reasons should not work and are actually barred from working in a lot of juristictions for all the right reasons...

@kkarhan @atomicpoet To put it lightly - the implications made in those videos are *heavily* contested within the actual Roblox dev space. Just focusing on the claim that Roblox is predatory, the first ~9 mins of this video are a really good breakdown of how the Roblox economy works and the real issues with the system (which are totally different from the claims made in these videos). That only scratches the surface of problems with those videos though.

@atomicpoet And this guy sits on the board of #BlueSky. Which doesn't seem to be nearly as much of a red flag for people as I thought it should/would.

@atomicpoet why does this sounds familiar. Ah coz hive.io formerly steemit and a few other cryptocurrencies have tried something simmilar. Just that they paid you to post also.

@anant
Zaps on Nostr go from sender to receiver, 100%. If you want your node hoster to get any money (for running the service you use) you have to zap them seperately.

I hate equally the fact that people form such strong opinions about systems they don't understand, as I do the sheer amount of shilling and begging going on on Nostr.

Nostr has both (free) likes and zaps; nothing Jack does will change that. Nostr is just as federated as AP.
@atomicpoet

@atomicpoet
Commerce can be part of social interaction, but it's no substitute for it.

@atomicpoet

probably because he wants to skim 10% of that payment 🤣

@atomicpoet I'm not against a money channel alongside a free react emoji channel. Lightning is the right choice for that, being the most permissionless and decentralized option.

As long as they are alongside a react button having a tip button too probably better than not having it.

Wouldn't expect to use it much though. Even at hundreths of a cent.

@atomicpoet i wouldn't use either to inform an algo though. One too superficial, the other too easily gamed by the rich.

@pre @atomicpoet "too easily gamed by the rich" — Jack would be very confused, as you're saying this as if it's a bad thing. 😉

@atomicpoet What's the ratio of ‘zaps’ to Schrute bucks?

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social Every time I hear something new about, it only becomes a bigger red flag. I've used Nostr once, every public relay was a nightmarish hell hole filled with bitcoin bots promoting their new pyramid scheme. It's honestly not an actually usable alternative to social media.

@demi It took me a lot of effort to find a spam-free Nostr relay. Months, in fact.

@atomicpoet

> Likes are superficial and exist only to inform an algorithm.

This right there is a perfectly clear credo of surveillance capitalists. Just wow.

No, you stockholder-value-optimizing-robot, likes exist to inform the author that you liked their post. They exist to inject some positive emotions into the cold machine. They exist so that we can connect on a human level without trivializing it by putting into words; you know, as us humans do.

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social
The post has to be damn likeable if I'm gonna pay to show it
:calc_laugh:

@atomicpoet Someone gonna REALLY have to like that "cute" caturday picture to spend money on it, even if it's just a tiny fraction of a cent.

@atomicpoet Is he involved with Nostr? Wasn’t it only BSky?

@nmg He’s donated a substantial sum of money to Nostr, and seems to be very enthusiastic about it. However, he does not run it.

And he doesn’t run Bluesky either, but he sits on the board of directors.

@atomicpoet what an incredibly evil idea. Yet another way to empty users' pockets to fill his own.

@atomicpoet I'm not trying to thrash about Nostr, but it's not even close to Mastodon. I can't think of any sane person choosing Nostr over Mastodon.

@atomicpoet @rysiek Not great, but what the hell is Nostr (apart from a misspelling of Nostril)

@atomicpoet @rolle Well, if that doesn’t kind of underline the statement: ”The business model is the message”. 😃

@atomicpoet Just reinforced what many believed when Jack made the switch from Favorites to Likes… he doesn’t actually understand how people use the feature. If the only use he sees is for algos, then he never understood his users.

@atomicpoet
"What we need to do is build social algorithms based directly on who pays money"

@atomicpoet so 'zaps' are just tips that help burn the planet more?

@atomicpoet on one hand, i see a point in trying to reward people producing content we like, likes are not a currency of any kind, they don't allow someone to take the time to do research or creation, so unless we want people to live of advertisement deals, something like this might be useful. On the other hand, we know the kind of content that gets rewarded the most on such platforms, and it's not pretty, on the third hand, accepting this is about money, rather than social interactions 😒.

@atomicpoet Only if there is a dezap function where I can dislike something and get reimbursed for wasting my time.

@atomicpoet wtf is nostr, Jesus Christ how many social networks does this man manage

@EshuMarneedi Like ActivityPub, Nostr is a decentralized social media protocol. Its primary difference is that it focuses on relays instead of federated servers.

@atomicpoet They seem so convinced this is something we all want to do. It's this grand delusion that so many overrated valley punks and their VCs seem to have. It has no basis in the real world.

@shoq @atomicpoet Also, Nostr is just a crypto/blockchain/tech bros echo chamber where they all share insight on how smart and wonderful they all are and how epic all the tech they are developing is. Kind of useless for most folks, really.

@jimcarroll @atomicpoet I am sure all of that is true, but global media is still sitting out there waiting for a venue, and whoever delivers it to them first is likely to win. Twitter wasn't elegant on any level. It was just there at exactly the right time.

@shoq @atomicpoet If media orgs can't figure out Mastodon/Fediverse, I sure as heck can't see them figuring out Nostr!

@atomicpoet @shoq that sounds fine but I draw the line at zlorping your gloop

@atomicpoet wow, just wow. Imagine if Twitter was built on that from that start. Lol techbros

@atomicpoet What a way to unite the world

@atomicpoet Funny how he refers to "real cost" as though only money is real. Money is not real.

@atomicpoet The kind of thoughts you have when you've just grown completely used to having unlimited money and can't comprehend life without it.

@atomicpoet

I am not sure Jack is an intelligent person.

The Lightning Network is a failure. The apps that call themselves "LN wallets" -- like Chivo, Strike, and Wallet of Satoshi -- are centralized "bitcoin banks", like Coinbase, that do not use the LN at all and process transactions on a traditional database.

@atomicpoet I have no idea what Nostr is, which gives you some idea of how up I am on these things.
