There seems to be a Steam server outage going on atm, some reporting they cannot login.

Valve said it's affecting their games too. It's being worked on.

@gamingonlinux That's why #DRM is bad. You can't play a single game without passing their login servers
@gamingonlinux @r0k @rotopenguin is right - you have to pass the login server anyway

@schmaker @rotopenguin @gamingonlinux yes, but you don't have to pass the login server *right now* (during an outage) if you follow those directions. (people don't seem to be understanding that.)

@gamingonlinux

Sorry, new computer. Was downloading all the games again. I'll postpone it to later tonight.

@gamingonlinux I managed to get back into Steam on Linux using the -tcp command-line argument.

Based on the bug reports, it seems to be something to do with a WebSocket server somewhere going offline, I think.

@gamingonlinux When I can get a game on GOG rather than Steam - I do.

@mikeTesteLinux @gamingonlinux On GoG.com the games are said to be sold without any DRM.
If you buy a game on Steam, that game installation and it's binaries are bound to your Steam account and the service. This means game's publisher can for example take the game down and make your Steam copy useless.
On GoG in the grand majority that's not the case - GoG will want you to install their proprietary game launcher,but you can still just download the installation files that are untethered.

@unfa @gamingonlinux O ok, didn't know the DRM free was still there, next time I'll check if its on GoG b4 buying on steam.

@mikeTesteLinux @unfa @gamingonlinux stuff is generally there, the issue is that it’s almost always more expensive in my experience

@tarcisio_surdi @mikeTesteLinux @gamingonlinux I only buy games on sales anyway :D
I add to wishlist, wait for an e-mail notification and then buy when it's "as cheap as a sandwich" as Ross Scott puts it.
But yeah - if it costs me 15-20% extra but I get to keep the game even if Steam shuts down - that's a fair deal to me.

Reminds me of something I read about today.

Today there were a bunch of messages from people using #Finale. They really suffer from this closed ecosystem. The issue is that Finale close its business and that customers now are trapped in having data (music scores) they cannot use in the long term.

@unfa @mikeTesteLinux @gamingonlinux it really doesn’t make any sense to buy games when they are not on sale, especially if they’ve just been released (you essentially pay for beta testing until most bugs are patched).

I’m generally against all things DRM, but with Steam I don’t really feel the same way about it. Out of all the big tech companies, Valve is one of the few that I still trust since they’ve never done anything that would make me worry about being harmed in that way AFAIK.

@tarcisio_surdi @mikeTesteLinux @gamingonlinux Valve so far has been rather benevolent, when it comes to corporate overlords, but things may change once Gabe Newell is no longer at the steering wheel...
