★ Proposed Name for GM’s Upcoming In-House Software Platform (You Know, the One That Isn’t Going to Support CarPlay): Edsel
https://daringfireball.net/2023/05/gm_edsel
@daringfireball @gruber ”It’s like CurrentC, but for cars!”
@jamesdempsey @daringfireball @gruber oh god, CurrentC! That’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.
@scottaw @jmahlman @jamesdempsey @daringfireball @gruber one of the best news pieces I ever wrote was about them and how anyone signed up with them was turning off ALL contactless payments. The image was courtesy of @jgamet of a Rite-aid sign with a note: "NOT accepting Apple Pay." And a second note: "Now accepting goats and chickens."
Ok maybe not best, but it is still one I'm proud to have written. (:
@Verso @scottaw @jmahlman @jamesdempsey @daringfireball @gruber I’m glad I got to play a part in that article. Bonus: I still have that graphic archived.
a great dunk at the time, and even more satisfying with the passage of time.
@jamesdempsey @gruber @daringfireball Funny story. I worked for Target at the time and got to use CurrentC early. No NDA, no agreements at all…so I wrote about it. It sucked.
A few days later I got an angry email that said I was not allowed to say anything about it publicly. I wasn’t in for a fight, so I took it down. They went under and I republished it
@matt @jamesdempsey Credit to you for nailing it. (You should have sent it to me to publish from a little birdie!)
@jamesdempsey @matt Seems like I should have linked to you more than this, but there is this one from 2014: https://daringfireball.net/linked/2014/10/24/dempsey-and-the-breakpoints
@gruber @matt Wow—that was a while ago, but reading it again, I absolutely remember that post. Almost ten years, maybe it’s time for another album…
Well, first things first, we’re bringing back the live concert during WWDC week: https://livenearwwdc.com
@jamesdempsey @matt How is the latency with wireless CarPlay in your Bolt? I recently rented a Kia Serento and among dozens of things I despised about it, the wireless CarPlay latency was pretty bad. (And the USB port for a wired connection didn't work.)
@jamesdempsey @gruber @matt Wireless CarPlay on my 2021 BMW 330i is sketchy. Often doesn’t connect over WiFi. When it does, has a 2 second latency. Yours any better?
@jamesdempsey @gruber @matt !! I also have a Bolt & GM’s no-CarPlay announcement convinced me to stop waiting for a new GM EV (I moved to VT and want something better in deep snow, the bolt is fantastic for a car with 6” clearance & no AWD! If I still lived in CA I wouldn’t be replacing it)
@matt @jamesdempsey @gruber @daringfireball
It’s funny because I think Target did eventually get it right. I actually love their Cartwheel app (one of the better mobile pick up ones too) scanning, saving, and using Target Wallet to save the additional 5%.
And they’re confident enough in their product they allow Apple Pay as an alternative now too.
Everywhere else, I use Apple Pay as often as possible. Also, people are still surprised the Watch can do Apple Pay.
@matt @jamesdempsey @gruber @daringfireball Nowadays you do know to make up answers to those security questions, right? I always do that. I just look around the room I'm in or outdoors and pick 2 or 3 random objects, and then into 1Password they go.
@jamesdempsey @daringfireball @gruber It's worse because at least with CurrentC it wasn't just one company trying to do it by themselves.
@jamesdempsey @daringfireball @gruber why will a non-CarPlay UI necessarily suck? This is Apple Music in CarPlay vs Apple Music in a Tesla. I know what I prefer.
@selsoe @jamesdempsey Now show me Overcast and Apple Maps in a Tesla.
@gruber @jamesdempsey your preferred boutique podcast app is not available, but that’s hardly a dealbreaker for most people. Apple Maps is obviously not available, but Teslas navigation is pretty damn good, as its voice recognition is better than Siri IMO. Most importantly, Teslas range estimation is super reliable and it automatically preconditions the battery when navigating to a fast charger. Apple Maps doesn’t do any of that (or only little in a few supported models).
@gruber @jamesdempsey also, CarPlay is glued on to the existing (and often bad) car UI and you have to exit CarPlay to interact with car specific features. Yet, some functionality is duplicated in CarPlay. One seamless software experience can and should perform much better than “bad car UI” + CarPlay. You are right that there’s a good chance GM’s new solution will suck, but I understand why they want to do it instead of two half baked solutions. And Tesla, Rivian and others have succeeded.
@selsoe @jamesdempsey But you're right. It might not suck! But I'll bet it does.
