German news website @heiseonline has been very active on the #fediverse, now the second largest news account. Editor @mho has extensively documented the process.
Findings compared to their (6x sized) Twitter account:
Way higher engagement than Twitter
Website traffic slightly below Twitter
Valuable information for any news organisation that is debating whether to leave Twitter, and which platform to join instead!

@fediversereport @heiseonline @mho @fediversenews @spreadmastodon While it’s very nice that they appreciate Mastodon, let’s not forget about their “cookie wall” style cookie banners, that only let you opt out if you pay for their subscription. This is a policy that does not fit the #privacy ideals of the Mastodon community.
@preya @fediversereport @heiseonline @fediversenews @spreadmastodon Well, there is a "Pur-Abo" without Tracking:
https://www.heise.de/pur/info-faq/
@mho @fediversereport @heiseonline @fediversenews @spreadmastodon I know. still: “Pay Money or get tracked” didn’t align with the values of the Fediverse very well. I know recently you added advanced options to prohibit specific 3rd party cookies. Still, no decline button on the top level is a very shady dark pattern.
@preya @fediversereport @heiseonline @fediversenews @spreadmastodon Datenschutzkonferenz erklärt "Pur-Abo-Modelle" grundsätzlich für zulässig
Das Nachverfolgen von Nutzerverhalten kann prinzipiell auf eine Einwilligung gestützt werden, wenn alternativ ein trackingfreies Bezahlmodell verfügbar ist.
@mho @fediversereport @heiseonline @fediversenews @spreadmastodon I’m aware of this document, yet it’s not legally binding, still waiting for actual verdicts on this. Also, just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s ethical or nice.
