Julie London - Julie is My Name - Volume 2

A set of standards sung into a very close mic by Julie London, accompanied by guitar and bass, from 1958.

Well recorded, although a bit weird, with the vocals sometimes centered, and sometimes hard left.

(I had no idea that Julie London was once married to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame, and also played Dixie McCall on Emergency!)

Abbe Lane - Be Mine Tonight

Interesting to listen to 50s “bombshell” female vocalist albums (another example is Julie London, of “My Name Is…”) as they were quite popular.

Here, on her first album, Lane is backed by Tito Puente and his orchestra, and the songs are generally Latin-flavored, as you’d expect.

Lane’s voice is *right* up front, and while not technically “perfect”, the material is tailored to her and comes across well.

Cécile McLorin Salvant - Woman Child

Hard to believe this 2013 album is Cécile McLorin Salvant's second album; I've never found Cécile & the Jean-François Bonnel Paris Quintet out there ( it's CD-only and it was only available in France and Japan - but it's available streaming).

Anyway...a mix of pretty impeccable versions of standards and a few originals. Great sounding record, too.

A very great concert of a very great musician with a great band of excellent musicians:

It is fascinating how she plays her voice. The fundament of her singing technique is very classical exact, but she merges also different modern techniques like nearly beatboxing or jodeling. The melody lines so exact, great! Also the instrumental parts ... YAYYY!

Hear and enjoy!

Can anyone recommend some popular music with female vocals, that are mixed well? A friend wants me to collab on an ambient track where I’d sing/come up with the vocal melody & lyrics. The examples he provided are not mixed well, so I’m having trouble understanding what he wants (unless he wants to mix it like his examples, in which case I’ll turn it down).

I’ve replied to my friend; thanks to everyone for your help! 🙏

Cécile McLorin Salvant - For One to Love

Intrepretations of love songs, of various types, mostly with a bit of a feminist slant, by one of our very best vocalists. It's kind of incredible how flexible her voice and phrasing is...and then she does it in French, too.
