it's, frankly, rude that one of the COVID variants was called "Centaurus."

Why?

Because Centaurus (the #constellation) is #Chiron -- and Chiron is the wise, just centaur who the #mythological inventor of medicine & surgery.

And thus the rudeness 😂

In our exploration of the #GreekMyths behind the #constellations, we've talked a fair amount about the Greco-Roman god of the #theater (wine, fertility, arts-- lots of multihyphenates...). So far, Dionysus has shown up in the myths of Corona Australis, Corona Borealis, and Lyra.

But probably my favorite thing about him are his followers -- the Maenads.

Their claim to fame?

Dancing. Singing. Ripping people apart.

You know we love 1) Neptune (love them nep-toots) & Aurora, so this new image from #JWST is *perfection*

This week we talked about the #mythology of the #constellation #Centaurus

While the main story is about the centaur Chiron, his story also intersects with Prometheus, who was punished by Zeus to have his liver eaten by an Eagle every day... truly nightmare fuel 😱

To learn more about these #myths, check out our #podcast episode here: starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/

Here's the 'wisest' and 'most just' centaur & mythological creator of surgery and medicine teaching lil Achilles (of 'oops my ankle' fame) how to... shoot a bow and arrow ... 🤔

One way you can tell Chiron isn't like *other* centaurs is that he shows up an entire upper and lower body of a human... but with horse back legs.

In our most recent episode related to #myths #legend & #lore of #Lynx (here: starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/), we briefly mentioned the varied stories from Indigenous Peoples of the Americas about this creature.

As promised, here are some places I found these stories (please feel free to send any other resources our way too!):

For #MythologyMonday -- how about the #Roman myth of the #constellation Cygnus?

The story goes that when Phaethon, the son of Helios, drove his father's chariot he lost control & Zeus/Jupiter had to kill him.

In the aftermath, Phaethon's lover, Cygnus, collected his bones to give him a proper funeral. The gods were so moved by this devotion, they put him in the night sky as a swan (who famously mate for life).
