For #BlackHistoryMonth, #TechHub has changed our Info-Page Banner to include #ElijahMcCoy.

This isn't an amazing image, just something I threw together for @nicdex to put up, because I felt that putting up Elijah #McCoy's picture reflects who we are, what we stand for, and our thoughts on the world today.

Elijah McCoy's parents escaped from #enslavement in the #US in the early-1800s, gaining asylum in #Canada, and he was born in #Ontario in 1843. Being what we would now consider a "gifted" child, his parents saved money to send him to Scotland to study #engineering when he was 15.

He returned to the US after the Civil War, but could not find work as an engineer due to #racism and #segregation practices: anti-#discrimination programs like #DEI and the #EEOC, had not been established, so opportunities for even the most qualified #black men were scarce, passed up for even less qualified #white men.

(Continued)

I'm taking a break from social media and news for a few days. This #tariffs situation is really making me mad. Personally I won't be much affected, but a lot of hard working #canadians and #americans will be. I still can't believe he went forward with it.
I will keep working on getting the bank account and donations platforms back online for #TechHub, other than that I need a break.
See you later Fediverse.

Update on TechHub donations... We are still waiting on the bank account to get everything setup again.
I'm not sure what is taking #BMO so long to approve our new bank account. I went in person, signed everything, had all documents and my identifications.
You can open bank account online almost instantly now a days... 🤷

Just wanted to chime in on behalf of TechHub Moderation.

H1B Holders are PEOPLE, not policy.

Simply being against the POLICY of issuing #H1Bvisas is not something we can do anything about as moderators: discussion of immigration law is protected political speech, and legitimate conversation. However, it is NOT ok for anyone to attack #H1B Holders themselves, and especially not to refer to them as "H1Bs".

H1B holders are just workers trying to get by, following the rules and getting a legal #visa through legitimate means. Even if the government is issuing too many, and even though companies will always try to exploit them, these people do not have power here and this is in no way their fault.

"They" are not "actively harming" anyone. The System is.

Hate Speech against H1B holders themselves, or ANY group of #immigrants, is not allowed on TechHub, or the mainstream Fediverse in general, and will be dealt with accordingly.

Just wanted to make that clear.

Bonjour! #TechHub has finished moving servers from the #US to #Quebec in #Canada, ensuring our ability to remain a space for (mostly) #FreeSpeech and an alternative to billionaire run #SocialMedia, without as much worry about interference of far-right authoritarian governments.

Still working on some of the migration, including work-in-progress translations of some of this stuff to French, Spanish, and Portuguese, but that's on the way, and the server is now located in Canada.

зараз все норм, але здається що почав працювати повільніше (картинки якось дивно вантажить), але думаю це просто кеш не прогрівся ще

#TechHub #Moderation is getting a high volume of reports right now, so it's good that we just added another mod and we're getting ready to add some more. I think these spikes in #spam activity correspond to increased interest in #Mastodon and the #fediverse, because they correspond to new users showing up.

If y'all non-mods see new users saying hi, be sure to welcome them and give them #FediTips about things like following hashtags and posting an #introduction: users who have a friendly and helpful experience early on tend to stick around, and have a positive experience in general. We could use more people doing that, and you don't have to be staff to help grow the Fediverse!

IF YOU ARE ON A #TECH INSTANCE THAT IS CLOSING DOWN, YOU CAN ALWAYS MOVE TO #TECHHUB.

We just got a new server in Canada and are adding new moderators: we are well-connected, and ready to bring in anyone who needs an account here. If your server is #ShuttingDown, and you want to talk about #programming, #engineering, #electronics, #AI, #gaming, or anything else #science and #technology related, please come over here right away so we have time to get everything transferred!

#FediTips: To move an account, make the new account, and go into Settings -> Account, and use the two options at the bottom to link each account to the other. You can also download all your data, and import some of your old #Mastodon data on the new one.

If you need help, feel free to contact me: I am open to helping anyone who needs it with making #accounts, moving accounts, and getting set up on a new #account.

#fediverse, please #boost this to help get people #moving from the closing servers!

@Gargron
The changes to the wording of the #moderation policies #Facebook and #Threads are deeply concerning to hear about, however, they feel more like they are openly admitting what has always been the case than any substantive change. The company has always had an internal policy, like most other corporate social networks, to allow #HateSpeech and other #misinformation to proliferate, as these drive the engagement metrics that drive revenue, on top of often aligning with the values of leadership.

At #TechHub, our policy has, so far, been a "wait and see" approach. We have not blocked Threads yet, but if the time comes when they do finally federate, if ever, we are committed to the plan of taking server level action should their lack of moderation become too much of a problem for us.

Either way, this only underlines the need to bring more people into the #Fediverse network, and away from the large corporate #SocialNetworking services.

While it probably won't be an issue for 99% of users, just wanted to post another reminder that #TechHub will be moving our server (on which this #Mastodon instance is hosted) from the #US to #Canada, in response to the hostile administration of Elon Musk and Donald Trump. This was planned back in October, contingent on the election results, and will be completed by the 20th.

We will be stationed in #Quebec, where the admin lives, so expect more options for #French speakers, which will be implemented alongside #Espanol and #Portugues as we work to cater better to #CentralAmerica and #SouthAmerica (including #Brasil). We will also be subject to #CanadianLaw, which should not be an issue, as the main difference would be hate speech, which we already explicitly don't allow.

Just letting the #Fediverse know what's happening here. Otherwise, expect business as usual: we will remain committed to providing an open and friendly large-server option for #Tech workers and enthusiasts in #America.
