Tai chi grows strength underground, just like potatoes in a dirt bag.

Looks like nothing for weeks.
Then — green shoots.

Move. Breathe. Wait. Strength builds where you can’t see it.

Join me if you're ready to grow something invisible.
Class starts May 17 in Sebastopol.

New #introduction after migrating to Hachyderm.io - I work in data/research for a dog welfare and rehoming charity, mostly using #RStats, #Python and #SQL with occasional #QGIS.

I’m also interested in the environment, climate and wildlife. I don’t have loads of free time these days but I also enjoy music (see Bandcamp link!), books when I get round to reading them (see Bookwyrm link!), films (anything from highbrow to Highlander), cycling, yoga and #TaiChi (initially as ways to help manage #arthritis, before I began to appreciate both in their own rights).

Introduction

Baguazhang (?

?卦掌), translated as “Eight Trigrams Palm,” is a Chinese internal martial art known for its distinctive circular movements and fluid footwork. While it is widely practiced today for both martial and health benefits, its origins are deeply rooted in monastic traditions, particularly within Daoist practices.

Today was World #TaiChi day, so we did some #taijiquan in the garden.
It turns out it is surprisingly difficult to get a good still photo of Push Hands training (Tui Shou), but this one is at least amusing.
Push Hands trains sensitivity, listening, adhering and following skills; how to receive and redirect force without tensing up and resisting using strength.
It embodies a key principle of #Taiji, that of "Investing in loss", learning from failure rather than becoming obsessed with 'winning'.

Step into a serene Yoga Intermission! This video invites you to shift from intense yoga to a peaceful Tai Chi session. We still aim to enhance core strength, but at a soothing, gentle pace, making it a perfect break for both body and mind. Suitable for all skill levels, this practice helps you achieve harmony and calmness. Enjoy the experience and subscribe for more tranquil sessions!

Gaming continues with Roulette and Fallout 76.

I've been doing #TaiChi here in England for about 15 years and still consider myself a complete beginner.
It's a full workout for body and mind.

It may look like gentle exercise but it's surprisingly intensive, particularly once you start trying to focus on positioning, where your weight is placed, and coordinating all your limbs. (I can't even contemplate breathing correctly!).

TaiChi is also a martial art and can be highly effective by an experienced practitioner.

Our group - TaiChi and Quigung - is very sociable and that's a big part of it for me.
