@Gargron It's been days now, and I'm still having terrible issues with the advanced interface. It's virtually unusable without constantly refreshing.
Help?
@GottaLaff @Gargron I know you like Safari, but have you tried in Firefox (dunno if Chrome is avail for iOS). Might help them track down the bug to know if it's browser specific or not
@pixelpusher220 No, I don't use Firefox. I stopped for a good reason, can't remember why now. @Gargron
@GottaLaff @pixelpusher220 @Gargron My favorite Mac and iOS browser is now Duckduckgo. Speedy, open source, trackers disabled by default, altho you can easily enable them if needed.
@JYeo18 @pixelpusher220 Yes, I use it sometimes, but that's irrelevant to my problem.
@GottaLaff @JYeo18 the technical issue is websites can deploy entirely different code depending on which browser a request is from.
Yes it should work the same (and hopefully will soon!) regardless, but because different browsers sometimes do things differently it can be an issue.
It's one of the best/simple things about the Apple ecosystem... Stuff just works because they enforce things to be a certain way. But browsers step outside that ecosystem by definition.
@GottaLaff @pixelpusher220 Good luck, and thanks for your incredible efforts informing us about these trials!
@JYeo18 Many thanks! @pixelpusher220
@GottaLaff I apologize if this is not helpful or is splaning. Have you tried clearing your browser? You would need to do so going back to prior the date the problems began.
@TammyGentzel You're not intruding at all. I'll try.
@GottaLaff @TammyGentzel It is still under development, but you could always try accessing Mastodon using the elk.zone front-end instead of the default web interface.
@bhawthorne Sorry, that's Greek to me. @TammyGentzel
@TammyGentzel Okay, I cleared the cache. Let's see if it works. Thanks again.
@TammyGentzel It didn't work
@TammyGentzel My thoughts exactly, lol
@GottaLaff @Gargron You haven’t turned on Slow Mode by accident have you?
I actually like it, but if you say you don’t get automatic refreshing that could be your problem.
@fubaroque @GottaLaff @Gargron That's a good point, I forgot that I have slow mode myself on and I'm used to always refreshing.
@fubaroque @Gargron No. All my settings are the same as always. I just cleared Safari cache, we'll see if that helps.
@GottaLaff I’m very sorry you’re having issues. I’ll check if I can replicate these issues on my MacBook. As Lisa mentioned, browser extensions that modify page contents can often be the culprit in such cases, but I need to look into it.
@Gargron Ooh! Please say more. I don't have many extensions installed, but don't have the time to test them all.
Plus, tbh, masto is the site that fails regularly lately.
@Gargron My issues are no doubt not the same as Laffy's, and hers definitely warrant more attention. I did disable two Safari extensions and my (images not loading, columns not showing properly) issues seem improved. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks!
@Gargron Thanks so much, truly. I got rid of AdBlockerPlus, btw. I don't use many extensions for anything.
@GottaLaff Okay, I'm now in the advanced interface in Safari on OSX. Everything looks to be in order on first glance. What sort of actions precede the issues you've experienced? Anything that might help me replicate the conditions when it happens.
@Gargron Nothing really. I'll hit "reply" and it'll send me to some link from someone else's toot in a different column. I'll hit "like" and it'll open a reply window instead. I'll hit "reply" and ... nothing.
So many glitches. I can't remember all of them at the moment. But nothing really preceded them. They just occur, nearly immediately. @Snowshadow, you have similar issues too. Can you add?
@GottaLaff If you're on macOS, Mona Pro is worth every penny and very customizable:
@dpom I use Mona Pro, but I couldn't set it up for columns the way I wanted to for my laptop. I use it exclusively on my iPhone.
@GottaLaff @Gargron
Oh...there are so many.( I am using firefox updated& no issues on any other website)
When I first log on it is ok for a few minutes. it slows and continues to until it freezes within a couple of minutes. Clicking is hazardous bc I never know where it will lead me! Emojis appear/disappear on my posts without warning.
I am continually opening and closing tabs in order to unfreeze it. Columns disappear. Photos often refuse to load.
Started several days ago & has worsened..
@Gargron After replying to you, I went to "Like" the next toot I got in my notifications column. It wouldn't "take." Instead, when I went to do something else, the cursor turned into a magnifying glass and I couldn't do anything else until I refreshed the page.
@GottaLaff Does this begin happening after a certain amount of time the page has been open? How many columns do you have pinned and which ones if you don't mind me asking? Do you have slow mode enabled?
@Gargron As I mentioned, it starts nearly immediately.
No, slow mode not enabled.
Columns: 7, including Home, private mentions, and the one that opens up if you click on a toot. I don't even have Local open. I have 3 lists that each have a column, and notifications + Home, DMs, and the one that opens if you hit a toot.
@GottaLaff Hm, so it's not what I thought it might be then. I've pinned the same amount of columns and everything is still working fine. I've found a glitch when I click a post and the page scrolls to the right, the last column isn't displayed correctly until I scroll manually again, but that doesn't sound like the issue you're having. Can I ask which model of device you're using?
@Gargron You mean my MacBook? MacBook Air.
@GottaLaff I don't have access to a Macbook Air. I'm testing on a Macbook Pro so this issue could be masked by the performance difference. I'm afraid that I won't be able to offer a quick resolution to this problem because I still can't figure out what's happening. I can recommend trying out the Phanpy web client for Mastodon in the mean time, it also supports multiple columns and might not have the same issues.
@Gargron @GottaLaff
This is ocurring on other brands of computers also. : (
@GottaLaff One more question, when the cursor turns into something it's not supposed to be, or a button doesn't take, does this coincide with a new post appearing in any of the open columns? How frequently do new posts appear in the interface? This information might give me a clue.
@Gargron New posts are always appearing in them. Some are slower to do that than others, of course. Home is constant. But the others are less frequent. Some move very slowly.
@GottaLaff Can you try unpinning and hiding the private mentions column for me, and tell me if that improves the performance of the page?
@GottaLaff Can you try this please?
@Gargron Oh sorry, I missed that. Yes, will do. @Snowshadow
@Gargron Okay done.
Btw, it really seems to get bad whenever I click on a toot to open it in another column to read the thread.
Replying becomes nearly impossible, that's when I refresh.
I'll let you know about the DM elimination. Thanks so much.
@Gargron I did try to use it, but it has no DM columns and it's, at least to me, harder to read at a glance (not "TweetDecky" enough). Mastodon's interface is so much better. But thanks.
I'm also using Mastodeck, but it lacks a couple of functions, inexplicably.
So many thanks for trying. Keep me posted if you can.
@GottaLaff @Gargron I’m just a mere “reader” of Mastodon, but @ivory (iPhone, iPad, Mac) seems to support up to 6 columns and multiple windows on the Mac. I’ve never used it on the Mac - but it is a very good client.
I normally use @IceCubesApp - also excellent - but I have no idea if it supports anything like your Mastodon needs.
@escottf And you have to pay for it. @Gargron @ivory @IceCubesApp
Just for yuks, you might want to try enabling slow mode.
It'll reduce if not eliminate the auto-refreshing going on and maybe help.
Firefox not only offers better privacy (especially if you set DuckDuckGo as your search engine), but Mastodon on FF has been trouble-free on my Mac.
@rgulick I used to use it. I stopped for a reason. ... which I can no longer remember. I'm not switching everything over now.
@rgulick @GottaLaff @Gargron Firefox (with duckduckgo as a search) is also what I use for Mastodon. Windows 11. And Because I use VPN for sports I end up clearing my cookies and cache with CCleaner quite often.
