Good morning Fedi friends!
ICYMI yesterday I created a "stock" photo for flagship Fediverse apps* - so that writers could use it to illustrate articles about the #Fediverse.
(*Lemmy is a shortcut to the Lemmy.world website.)
I applied the KISS principle (Keep It Simple) because mainstream media does such a terrible job covering the Fediverse. I didn't want to add extra complexity.
For ease of use / maximum exposure I created an account on #Unsplash for it: https://unsplash.com/@elenarossini
@_elena Thanks! Oh and speaking of #Wikipedia, a possible example of what you could do is to edit the Wikipedia article about the Fediverse:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse
By inserting your stock photo from #Wikimedia Commons! One place for it could be under the "Software" sub-heading of that article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#Software
I like how different parts of the Wikimedia-verse ties together like the different platforms/apps of the #Fediverse.
@nacly thank you for the heads-up!
I am TERRIBLE at editing Wikipedia. I once attempted to add a few female filmmakers I know to a list of film directors (because: yay for representation) and totally messed it up / had the changes immediately squashed. I retreated in shame and never attempted again.
If I figure out how to upload the photo and send you a link could you do it?
@_elena YES, happy to edit the article for you!
That said, I share your struggles editing #Wikipedia and have only made minor typo-level edits, and added exactly one image to an article. AFAIK they're trying to improve the editing experience.
Sidenote: I am reassured that there are efforts to improve representation. The WikiEdu non-profit works with universities to turn Wikipedia editing into student projects! Such as improving #LGBTQ inclusion:
