Good morning Fedi friends!
ICYMI yesterday I created a "stock" photo for flagship Fediverse apps* - so that writers could use it to illustrate articles about the #Fediverse.
(*Lemmy is a shortcut to the Lemmy.world website.)
I applied the KISS principle (Keep It Simple) because mainstream media does such a terrible job covering the Fediverse. I didn't want to add extra complexity.
For ease of use / maximum exposure I created an account on #Unsplash for it: https://unsplash.com/@elenarossini
And the photo is now on the #Wikipedia page for the #Fediverse!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse
How did this happen?
Encouraged by @nacly I created a Wikimedia account and uploaded the photo here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fediverse_smartphone_apps_(photo_by_Elena_Rossini).jpg
And @nclm was super kind to add it to the Fediverse page (English and French). I can't thank you enough!!!
@_elena did some quick pics yesterday as well! but was not happy with the results (heavy cam, arms not long enough) and need get my tripod first. Thx for the inspiration!
@sturmsucht awesome Chris! I can't wait to see what you make.
The making of of my pic was rather comical (after getting my bracelet trapped in the tripod and then having to stretch my arm as far as possible to get the right focus). It's a miracle I was able to do it with such few takes – a stroke of luck, really
@_elena Cheers. Lemmy does have its own logo though (which lemmy.world is remixing)
@_elena Excited to see this "stock" photo published, thank you for all that you have done (and are doing)!
May I strongly suggest also publishing your images and (upcoming) videos to #Wikimedia Commons?
https://commons.wikimedia.org/
Unsplash may help with exposure, but the Wikimedia Commons is much more in line with the spirit of the #Fediverse and #opensource tech!
P.S. This is not the same as #Wikipedia, though you may want to post something there, too!
@nacly oh thank you for the heads-up! I will publish it there too - excellent recommendation
@_elena I have several commercial stock photo accounts, you've inspired me to create and upload some shots like this so that this sort of fediverse image is available where news orgs and magazines are looking for their images - even if it's "wildly successful" by modern stock image standards, at 10 cents per license, I'm estimating that my hourly rate for shooting, editing and uploading will be roughly 2.50 USD if I get lucky LOL.
@hashbangperl ha I know what you mean (re: licensing). When you create your own photos please ping me and I will share them widely
@_elena Thanks! Roger, Wilco
@_elena I'm gonna get rich (enough to maybe get another lens cap)
@_elena what a great idea! More of these are needed!
[*] Loops is technically not in the Fediverse yet, but hopefully it will catch the attention.
@andypiper thank you Andy!
There are other photographers I know currently working on their own versions. Exciting times for the Fediverse
Amazing photo and to the point. Thanks a lot for creating it!
@solarbranka thank you! I literally shot it in 5 minutes - 5 takes max (I was trying to get a nice hand holding technique).
It makes me happy if people use it because I'm SUPER passionate about the Fediverse (duh!) and this pic was taken in my living room.
In the background - although very blurred - there's my child's colorful library (on the left) and her giant panda (on the right)
I find that your picture with a blurred background gives it a 'slice of life' and natural effect, really neat. As in the Fedi is present in our everyday life.
You're preaching to the converted
@_elena Thanks! Oh and speaking of #Wikipedia, a possible example of what you could do is to edit the Wikipedia article about the Fediverse:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse
By inserting your stock photo from #Wikimedia Commons! One place for it could be under the "Software" sub-heading of that article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse#Software
I like how different parts of the Wikimedia-verse ties together like the different platforms/apps of the #Fediverse.
@nacly thank you for the heads-up!
I am TERRIBLE at editing Wikipedia. I once attempted to add a few female filmmakers I know to a list of film directors (because: yay for representation) and totally messed it up / had the changes immediately squashed. I retreated in shame and never attempted again.
If I figure out how to upload the photo and send you a link could you do it?
@_elena YES, happy to edit the article for you!
That said, I share your struggles editing #Wikipedia and have only made minor typo-level edits, and added exactly one image to an article. AFAIK they're trying to improve the editing experience.
Sidenote: I am reassured that there are efforts to improve representation. The WikiEdu non-profit works with universities to turn Wikipedia editing into student projects! Such as improving #LGBTQ inclusion:
https://wikiedu.org/blog/2023/12/14/improving-wikipedias-coverage-of-lgbtq-history/
@claudinec @_elena Thank you for your efforts! Other than WikiEdu I referenced above
, can you point to specific #Wikipedia / #Wikimedia initiatives that you're referring to?
@nacly @_elena There's the Wikimedia LGBT+ user group which aims to coordinate efforts across Wikimedia/Wikipedia projects.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_LGBT%2B/Portal
They're on the fediverse! @wmlgbt
@nacly @_elena On English Wikipedia, the Women in Red project works on creating new articles and increasing representation of notable women, trans and non-binary subjects.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red
There may be similar initiatives in some of the other Wikipedias.
@nacly @_elena More generally, again on English Wikipedia, the Teahouse is meant to be a newbie-friendly help desk.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Teahouse
@claudinec thank you for all the great resources Claudine! @nacly
@claudinec @_elena Nice!! Thanks a bunch for the links.
@_elena This is great! Thanks!
@_elena hey this is a neat idea! Put images of the Fediverse out there so that reporters lookoing for stock photos actually find a sensible version of what they're looking for. Maybe I should take some too, although I don't have any stock photo accounts ️
@badrihippo The best outcome would be if they use such a Fedi apps stock photo to illustrate an article about commercial siloed asocial media.
@_elena @nclm Glad to see @nclm beat me to it! I just added a caption translation and extra info to the "Structured data" tab of the #Wikimedia photo so it can be (hopefully) more discoverable:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fediverse_smartphone_apps_(photo_by_Elena_Rossini).jpg
BTW @_elena if you want, you could include links to your Fediverse profiles, website, etc. to your Wikimedia account page!
Really happy to see the #Fediverse and Wikimedia-verse #multiverse coming together.
@nacly thank you so much!
I'll make a note to add my Fediverse links ASAP
@thek3nger grazie Davide!!!
@_elena @nacly @nclm Very cool!
I'm still waiting for someone to add a link to https://fediverseexplorations.org to the English article about the fediverse, right now it's only on the German version
@_elena Great idea, well executed!
@_elena I was JUST thinking about the need for this as I saw an article about "alternatives" that had the bog standard "phone with the rent-seeking fash apps on it" shot as its opener! Bravo!
@_elena I'm having issues in signing up. Please can you put me through better
@_elena if the collection is not limited to apps but allows links to website interfaces, you could add bookwyrm: https://joinbookwyrm.com/ (AFAIK there is no app yet)
@libreinator OMG that was fast! thank you for this!!!
