What is the closest thing to "ResEdit" for the youths of today?

David Smith

@futurebird some time ago, in a fit of sleep deprivation induced brain malfunction, I made this (ResEdit reminded me of it)

@Catfish_Man @futurebird if a trans girl coder takes in too much cocaine does it cancel out into resedit or produce some other shit entirely

@detondev @futurebird I can think of an experiment to find out, but I cannot ethically suggest trying it

@Catfish_Man @futurebird This is fantastic and you need to share it in Slack. This is pure Friday Thread gold.

@Catfish_Man @futurebird @mcc
So I'm still looking for a John McAfee cross-compiler that targets ARM...

@Catfish_Man

feel like python would be in like five different places

@Catfish_Man @futurebird I'm mostly in the math/gender quadrant and that feels right.

@j3rn I've gotten this reaction surprisingly often considering it's a mix of vibes and nonsense 😂

@Catfish_Man @futurebird Like Steve Jobs said, Apple sits at the intersection of ElectricityMath and CocaineGender.

@Catfish_Man @futurebird I am sitting here, seeing that work pulls me towards the cocaine end, but I want to be more towards the gender end, maybe a bit of bias towards different electricity.

But, like, what is meant by different electricity? My brain produces a lot of options, none of them obviously the right answer.

@crypticcelery @futurebird I would encourage you not to assign too much precise meaning to my borderline-hallucinatory shitposting, but the vibe that end is going towards is using computers to build more computer-y stuff. Data structures, hardware, compilers, etc…

And yes, the “business/work computing is about getting the execs more coke” thing was intentional. Kinda channeling the 80s + this comic panel

@crypticcelery @futurebird except McAfee and Bitcoin of course. They’re up there for the more obvious reason.

@Catfish_Man okay, then I got it right. And I think even for the more corporate stuff, this applies. Maybe not necessarily coke, but you get the idea.

@Catfish_Man @futurebird @jhamby the right answer is not even on the chart: Heat

@afink incorrect, they all do that so “outputs heat" provides 0 bits of information to use to position on the chart, and we need *at least* 5 bits of information to distinguish all the elements, let alone place them appropriately

@Catfish_Man @futurebird

Cubical Agda maxes out Math & Gender, based

@Catfish_Man @futurebird you introduced me to dryad.technology/artist this chart is great

@Catfish_Man @futurebird @aeva if pressed I could not justify it rationally but every point on this graph that I recognize is … disturbingly, precisely correct

@aeva @glyph @futurebird yeah totally fair. I have been blessed with most of my exposure to both Haskell and Rust people being cool queer folks, but I’m aware that the Palantir/Memecoin/HFT bros are out there >.<

@Catfish_Man @glyph @futurebird I would like to propose that HLSL is a cocain language and GLSL is a gender language, and despite both being almost exclusively used to perform an eye watering amount of math, both are for turning electricity into more different electricity

@aeva @glyph @futurebird lmao hell yeah. I know almost literally nothing about graphics so this is great info

@Catfish_Man I would say Emacs Lisp is much more gender than fishscale. If there's a cohort of Elisp devs who favor nose candy over stripey-socks toes candy, I haven't heard about them, and I've been a published Elisp dev myself since before stripey socks were invented.

@alexis I legit do not remember why I put that there. Might have just been dunking on rms, honestly. I wouldn't read too much into it.

@Catfish_Man@mastodon.social @futurebird@sauropods.win never played with resedit, but sounds neat! if you got a math axis, you need APL :)
