Mosaic 1.0 released 1993

You can still get an updated version (unsupported) at floodgap.com/retrotech/machten

@cypnk
I actually used Mosaic 1.0 on a 2-bit grayscale display. Eventually I patched it to treat it as monochrome. The code assumed you were monochrome or 8-bit color. Without the patch every image would be 4 tiny copies of the image with each repetition shifted down one more pixel.

@kurtm @cypnk I am curious to see an example/mock up of that effect, if you happen to have the time or inclination

@rubah @cypnk This is a really fast mockup. I chose @mwlucas's logo because it was black and white and I had it on hand.

The real bug would've actually had the missing pixels start showing at the top, but I don't have *that* much patience 😄

@kurtm @cypnk @mwlucas how bizarre! Thank you for the example!

@rubah @cypnk @mwlucas You're welcome.

I think it had to do with how the X server interpreted the 8-bit data onto the 2-bit display.

Also, a little correction, I recall now it didn't assume 8-bit *color*, but 8-bit greyscale. I think. It was some 25 years ago now 😀

@cypnk ..the code's still being updated?

@drwho I’m not sure if the last two digits on the changelog represent year, but if it is, then it was last updated 2011. Still way more recent ;)

@cypnk @drwho It says "Copyright 2009, 2015 Cameron Kaiser" in the changelog.

@anatol_at @Tom I gotta watch that show. I've been hearing about it for years, but never got a chance to actually go through it

@cypnk It's worth being watched every single episode. Great series for everyone interested in 80s and 90s tech and everyone who just likes series with great actors playing well thought and interesting characters.
