#Neostumbler collects the data in the first place. While databases like #MLS (Backups), #OpenCellID and also Apples exist and are easily available, #BeaconDB only uses newly gathered data.

Neostumbler takes the real GPS location together with nearby Wifis, Cell Towers and Bluetooth beacons. These datasets get uploaded, and shortly after, clients like #geoclue or #microG that use BeaconDB, can find a location there.

Neostumbler shows an overlay map for existing data

Do you have a recommendation for a #linux tool to navigate a heavy #truck (no "normal" car!) via #gps offline?
I tried #pureMaps but miss the adjustment for car size parameters. GPS can be provided via #geoclue or #gpsd sufficiently.

I just need map display and route planning - ideally an option which is aware of obstacles like low bridges and weight limits on particular roads and show alerts.

In case it matters: I will be on german roads.

Read this very interesting blog about services in . It also explains how to set up to use the @beacondb services.

I already did that previously, and my Fedora laptop can find its location pretty precise without having a device.

Of course I collected a lot of measurements and uploaded them to to make this possible.

Good news everyone! Geoclue 2.7.2 is out.
Now for the bad news: Although alternatives exist, the shutdown of Mozilla Location Services (#MLS) basically crippled #Geoclue for devices without a GPS.
Help is on the way though, code for a GeoIP location source is being developed, and it should make it easy to add different providers. Please see the MR here:

Mozilla Drops Axe on its Privacy-Friendly Location Service

Mozilla has announced it is retiring its Mozilla Location Service (MLS), which provides accurate and privacy-respecting geolocation data. Developers and third-party projects currently use MLS to provide location data, such as FreeDesktop location framework GeoClue, leveraged by apps like GNOME’s Maps and Weather, have only a few months left to use it. We knew cuts were coming from the new CEO but the axe has fallen ruthlessly quick on this! New API access keys will not be granted going forward (and pending requests deleted), Mozilla say. In late March, POST data submissions will return 403 responses. Finally, on June 12, :sys_more_orange:

After being kneecapped by a troll years ago, Location Services, the only somewhat trusted (non-Google/Apple) "Wi-Fi positioning system" (geolocation based on triangulating collected SSIDs), is now shutting down: github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/iss

MLS was how could get a meters-accurate location without a receiver / sky line-of-sight.

It was used by many / apps to get instantaneous neighborhood-level location (for maps, local weather…) on laptops.
